I offer clients a flat rate and not an hourly rate, so that they can be certain about what the final cost of indexing their book will be.
I charge $4 per page of the book for a basic index. That assumes a page that contains about 500 words. The rate for a book with many more or many fewer words would be adjusted up or down accordingly.
There are four main factors that determine the time it takes for me to create an index, and the resulting fee:
- The length of the book.
- The specialty of the content. A technical book or a scholarly book on a very specialized topic will take longer to index than a nonfiction book for the general public.
- The depth of the index. If you require that even the smallest details of your content be indexed, then that will of course take more of my time.
- Deadline. If your turnaround time is urgent then I would need to add an extra cost in order to accommodate the tighter deadline.
